Staten Island Music and Nightlife: The week's top live concerts, happy hours and open mics

Article from SIlive.com: original

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — From elegant cabaret at Lorenzo's and rowdy bar rock at 120 Bay Cafe to open blues jam sessions at Adobe Blues: There's something for every musical taste this week around the borough.

THURSDAY: APRIL 24

NYSAI Poetry Open-Mic, hosted by Julie Bentsen in conjunction with "Flushed," a new poetry/literary magazine the last Thursday of every month. Any poetry format is acceptable: free verse, soliloquy, slam, monologue, song, a combination of any of these, etc.

This month's theme: "The Unconscious." So what the hell does that mean? The content of the poetry should stem from the unconscious realms of your Mind – the subject matter may be influenced by the following things: Dreams: Any night-time dreams or nightmares: remembered from childhood, adolescence or more recently. Hallucinations, Delusions, Mirages: ever see or experience something that you were not sure was actually there? These experiences may or may not be influenced by substances and/or mental health conditions (we won’t judge). Waking Visions: anything seen with the Mind’s Eye: images seen during meditation or Reiki sessions, fantasies, active imagination (images seen right before you fall asleep), etc. The Unexpected: despite your best planning and efforts, something occurs that completely counters what you've tried to accomplish If you have a poem inspired by any of these things, bring it on! If not: be brave, work a dream that you can remember, and see where it leads! If you have a poem that does not fit the above description, we would still very much like to hear from you - all are welcome! 7:30-10 p.m. Free.

To be held at DEEP TANKS STUDIO, 150 Bay St. at the corner of Victory Blvd., Tompkinsville
